Immediate Actions in an Emergency

ACTION 1 Implement Incident Management Plan with Group Leaders

  • Group Leaders released from duties
  • Follow Quick Response Plan
  • Open Log of Events, Actions, times, Conversations with Media (use the Record of Action forms)
  • Preserve the scene of the incident if appropriate

ACTION 2 Assess risks and Ensure Safety

  • Contact Emergency Services
  • Maintain Incident Log through out (continue Record of Action forms)
  • Establish plans for return of group to safety: centre / UK
  • Determine condition of adults for continuing safe supervision

ACTION 3 Gather Information

  • When and where the incident took place
  • Names of Young Skiers and adults involved
  • Names and addresses of witnesses
  • Nature of injuries and names/locations of hospitals
  • Emergency action taken
  • Location and care of all injured
  • Remaining hazards
  • Collect Emergency contact information for Helpers and Young Skiers
  • Control the escape of inaccurate information

ACTION 4 Mobilise Management team for the Incident

  • Brief Trustees and establish independent telephone line
  • Clarify tasks, assign roles as identified in the Quick response card
  • Timetable meetings for on-going review of situation

ACTION 5 Contact Families

  • Brief Trustees and ensure clear statement agreed
  • Trustees will brief parents from a written statement and keep then informed of the situation as necessary

  • Establish a contact point with the Emergency Services
  • Appoint adult from Group to travel with casualties to Hospital
  • Complete accident Forms

  • Call other Assistance as necessary
  • Phone Home Contact to advise of situation and let relevant families know
  • Keep a record of witnesses and their contact numbers
  • Keep the rest of the Helpers informed of the Situation
  • Consider abandonment of the activity
  • Arrange for Non- casualties to return to the UK if necessary
  • Remain available to Emergency Services and supervising Helpers and Young Skiers
  • Organise Emergency Funds if necessary
  • Do not allow anyone to talk to the media unless Group Leaders have given permission
  • Support and care for others especially Young Skiers
  • Maintain vital communications with other Helpers and Leaders at all times
