Salveson Ski Group

Kathyrn Salveson and Judy King

About 30 years ago, an organisation known as The Across Trust was formed with the object of transporting disabled and chronically ill people on a pilgrimage to Lourdes by specially equipped vehicles. Over the years this facility expanded into holidays for the disabled within Europe and the UK.

As an extension to this, about 13 years ago, the Harpenden Across group developed winter holidays for disabled children at the NSCD in Winter Park. The Across Trust ceased to exist in 2001 and the ski holidays continued under the umbrella of the Harpenden Phoenix Trust.

Marilyn Lewis and Judy White were approached by Kathryn Salveson after taking part in 3 trips under her leadership, to take the trip on under their own steam. The third trip was undertaken without Kathryn being present. Kathryn wished that the trip should continue but in order for this to happen, had to be formed and itís own charitable status applied for. Kathryn was initially reluctant for us to use her name, but we felt that it was a fitting tribute to all her hard work. The ski trip in 2004 was cancelled due to lack of funds.

Charitable status was finally received after a huge amount of work on 27th July 2004. The registered address given on our Contact Us page. We are classified as a small charity with income over £10,000. The constitution was adopted on 30th January 2004 and amended on 13th July 2004.

Our objective is: the relief of disabled young people between the ages of 12 and 18 by the provision of skiing holidays, in particular but not limited to the NSCD in the USA and other facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupations in the interest of social welfare with the object of improving the life of such persons.

Marilyn and Judy

Marilyn Lewis and Judy White have led the trips in 2005 and 2006 with the help of Sue Cross in 2006. In 2005 we took 14 Young People and 16 Helpers and this year we took 11 Young People and 16 Helpers. We now have a new committee who have taken on the running of SSG under the guidance of our Chairman, Dr Judy White. In 2007 we took 8 young People and 10 Helpers.

We have a valuable connection with the Lakewood Police in Colorado which dates back to Kathrynís first trip to Winter Park when she needed help with the transport. She had a Hertfordshire policeman as a volunteer helper who was a member of the IPA (International Police Association) and a strong bond has remained ever since.

Through-out this Web site you will find details of all our supporters, the Committee and the wishes and intentions of the team. If you have any further questions or are interested in supporting or becoming part of our Charity, please contact us.
