Each Young Person will have a Care Plan and this will include specific manual handling information. It is crucial to your safety and that of the young person that you refer to this information prior to any lifting or transferring procedures.

THINK before you act- don't lift unless you must. If a lift is unavoidable ensure all the risks have been assessed and reduced.
ASSESS the Young Person's condition / load condition Your environment and surroundings, your ability and your competence and any other relevant factors ie lifting partner, equipment.
AIDS - ALWAYS use the appropriate aids eg sling, transfer board, slide sheets where recommended in the Care Plan.
EXPLAIN the move to the young person and colleagues. Ensure the commands are clear ie: 'everyone ready?.. After 3 we will lift....1,2,3 lift'
MOVE using rhythm and timing to carry out a manual handling procedure smoothly with clear instructions.
