We're back!

We're back! Everybody was successfuly reunited with their parents yesterday at Heathrow airport - parents and young people alike were happy to be home. The trip has been extremely successful and everybody has had a wonderful time.

This trip has been made successful through the hard work of the committee, the volunteers, our supporters and friends, fundraisers and our teams of friends in the USA. A big thank you goes out to everyone involved with the Salveson Ski Group and we are very grateful that you all continue to make these trips possible for our young people. We look forward to more trips in future - please feel free to join in if you wish!

You can see how we got on by looking at the trip diary at 2009 Diary pages.

We're finally skiing!

Well, we've finally made it to the USA and we are all settled in Winter Park. The weather, so far, has been good and the skiing fun. The team are all well and happy and loving the skiing. The accommodation is good, the food tasty (and super-large portions) and the staff at the NSCD are looking after us very well as always. We have also met up with our Lakewood Police friends and are grateful for their support.

Pre-Trip Press Release

This week, 11 young people with disabilities will be embarking on an amazing adventure to America. They will be travelling to the National Sports Centre for the Disabled (NSCD) in Winter Park, Colorado with the Salveson Ski Group, a UK-based charity. The overall aim of the trip is to encourage personal development and build character through an adventurous activity, namely skiing.

The Charity is taking young people from many different counties around the UK: Cornwall; Wiltshire; Berkshire; Bedfordshire; Oxfordshire and Lincolnshire - and range from 13 to 16 years of age. Their disabilities include Visual Impairment, Learning Difficulties and Amputees, each of which poses a different challenge on the slopes! The instruction is provided by the NSCD staff and will cover sit-skis, 3-track and 4-track skiing and hopefully some snowboarding! One year ago, I doubt any of these teenagers would have said they would be trying skiing!

The young people are looked after from beginning to end by a dedicated team of volunteers, all working with the Salveson Ski Group. This team gives their time during the year to run the fundraising that makes this trip possible and then gives up their time for the two weeks of this trip, at their own expense, to look after the young people. Each disabled person has a dedicated volunteer to help them, and those in wheelchairs have two volunteers allocated to them. As part of the team, we also take a doctor (the charity chairman) and a registered nurse to provide any specialist care. We are also lucky enough to have a prosthetics expert coming on the trip to look after any spare limbs!

Whilst the skiing is important, it is not our focus on the trip. The intention is to help the teenagers learn a new skill and develop their confidence by interacting with other teenagers like themselves who may have very different disabilities and, as an extra bonus, have time away from home on their own; sometimes for the very first time. I know the parents might appreciate the latter too! The transformation of previous teenagers on this trip is very noticeable to those lucky enough to interact with them.

Throughout this trip, we will be maintaining a diary on our website, located at www.salvesonskigroup.org and this will include photos of our teenagers on the slopes - learning their new skills! The site also includes considerable information about us, the trips, the volunteers and the young people.

The Salveson Ski Group became a registered charity in 2004 and is named after our founder, Katherine Salveson. She was taking teenagers on trips to Lourdes and the NSCD over a 15 year period and we successfully transitioned to become the Salveson Ski Group to comply with new Charity Commission rules. Since 2004, we have taken over 40 teenagers away so far, with 11 more this year.

This trip is funded entirely by friends, families, volunteers and some companies working tirelessly to raise the money. In an increasingly difficult market, the donations are extremely generous and without them, none of this would be possible. We are very grateful to everybody involved and we know it will make a huge difference to the lives of these 11 teenagers. A big thank you from them, and the trustees, to everyone involved with the Salveson Ski Group.
